NEW DELHI: The Election Commission is gearing up for assembly elections in five states early next year and its top officials will hold a meeting with Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Monday.
Sources said on Sunday that the commission is likely to get information from Bhushan about the status of COVID-19 and the spread of the new coronavirus mutant, Omikron.
The sessions for Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur are scheduled to end on different dates in March next year. The term of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly ends in May. The Election Commission may announce the election dates next month.
For election campaigns, polling days and counting dates, the commission may consult Bhushan to improve his COVID etiquette. The Chief Election Commissioner and fellow Election Commissioners will visit Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday to review the election preparations in the state.
